Using a yarn blend of wool and mohair, Patty begins each piece by hand-crocheting. Before they are felted, the pieces are much larger in size and will shrink up to 30% or more. Each design is then wet-felted in small batches at a time, using hot water, soap and agitation, which causes the wool fibers to interlock, becoming a firm fabric. The last steps in the process are molding, drying, trimming and steaming, all of which contribute to the creation of bowls that are soft to the touch with wonderful functionality.
Each pillow is hand felted using 100% merino wool that first starts off looking like cotton candy. Each layer of wool is laid out in tufts, then rubbed, rolled and agitated, using hot water and soap which causes the wool fibers to open up and become entangled. This process is much more labor intensive than the vessels and due to its handmade and unpredictable nature, produces a truly unique piece of art.
